What is anisotropy?

The term magnetic anisotropy describes the direction-dependent change of magnetic properties. If a material is magnetically anisotropic, the rotation direction of the object plays a role and makes it easier or harder to magnetize.

In the simplest cases, there is no preferred direction of the magnetic moment, but reacts the same way to all applied magnetic fields - a phenomenon called magnetic isotropy.
