Fly Screens
What is a fly screen?
A fly screen (also called window screen, insect mesh, fly mesh, mosquito net for windows and doors or insect screen) is a reliable protection against insects that can be used in houses, apartments, offices, workshops, caravans and many other places. Having netted windows stops spiders, insects and other vermin from entering the interior of a building or a car. Most often, a fly net is placed on a door or window frame, as these areas are unprotected openings of a building to the outside — insects enter the house through these openings most often in the summertime.
Whether you live in a house or an apartment, a window net screen is a good idea in any case. Especially in the summertime, even a single bug or fly can be difficult or even impossible to remove once it has entered your home. When the temperatures drop, a bug screen not only protects you from insects, but also from spiders, which prefer the warmth of homes - order your fly screen mesh today to keep them out!
What types of fly screens are there?
There are a variety of fly screens for windows and doors, and choosing the right one for your needs depends on many factors. It is first of all necessary to distinguish between fly nets that can be cut individually and prefabricated models, such as fly screens for patio doors or a window mesh screen.
Fly Screen Doors
A fly door can - most of the time - be purchased in the right format for the desired door and is therefore suitable for
- balcony doors,
- patio doors,
- swing doors,
- garden doors and
- many more.
An insect door screen is usually drilled or screwed into the frame and can then either be pushed open or work as slidable insect curtains.
Insect Screens for Windows
A window bug screen fulfills the same function as a mosquito net for doors, but is attached to the window frame instead of the door frame. Most people use it on
- skylights,
- basement windows,
- double windows,
- kitchen windows,
- bedroom windows and
- other passages or openings in the household
Fly Mesh Roll
Those who do not want to attach their fly screen to their window by drilling or screwing, appreciate a flexible window mesh that can be cut to size and attached to the frame with the help of Velcro or Magnetic Tape. This type of window screen is therefore the best option for people who live in rented apartments and are not allowed to make permanent changes to their door or window frame.
In our GAUDER online shop, you can buy fly nets for windows and doors in different colors and sizes, made of different materials, which you can then cut to size and attach to your window or door frame using the included Velcro Tape.
Mosquito net
A special type of fly screen is the mosquito net, which is usually draped over a bed or any other sleeping area and protects the sleeping persons against mosquitoes, which can transmit dangerous diseases. Mosquito nets have been used for thousands of years and have proven to be a very effective type of insect protection, especially in countries located near the equator. However, nowadays the term mosquito net is often used synonymously to the term fly screen.
What is a fly screen made of?
Most fly screens today are made of either fiberglass or polyester — you can order both types from our online store. Both fabrics have advantages and disadvantages.
Fiberglass insect screen
Especially in recent years, fly screens made of fiberglass (also called fibreglass in some locations), have proven their worth. Fiberglass material offers several advantages:
- perfect light transmission due to transparent net coloring,
- fringe protection thanks to a close-meshed fabric,
- optimal air circulation and weather resistance,
- reliable protection against insects and
- much more.
On the other hand, a bug net for windows or doors made of fiberglass is usually a bit more costly than an insect screen made of polyester. Nevertheless, whether you want to protect your balcony doors, sliding doors, skylights, or other entrances and exits in your home from insects, a fiberglass fly screen will provide you with optimal protection from any intruders.
Fly net made of polyester
A somewhat cheaper and yet sturdy alternative to a mosquito net made of fiberglass is a fly screen made of polyester fabric. Polyester is advantageous compared to fiberglass because the fabric is sturdier and more resistant to external factors, making it ideal for use in a household with pets. Compared to fly nets for doors or windows made of fiberglass, the material is slightly less permeable to light and air, which can disrupt circulation.
Where is a bug screen installed?
Usually, a window screen can be placed anywhere there is a gap in the wall of the house, especially on windows and doors. The most common places for a fly screen in the apartment or house are
- skylights,
- bedroom windows,
- balcony doors,
- kitchen doors and
- patio doors.
How to properly install window nets for insects
Installing the recently purchased bug screen door or window with a drill, hammer or other tools is a common option. In this case, the fly screen must be installed only once and, if properly installed, complete protection is guaranteed. On the other hand, this method takes away the flexibility of removing the window screen when moving out of an apartment or in, and leaves unpleasant residue on the frame.
For this reason, it is often better to resort to a gentler method of installation. Mosquito nets for windows can be installed in a variety of ways without a drill. The easiest way is to use Magnetic or Velcro Tape.
Attaching a mosquito window screen using magnets
Magnetic tape can help to attach a fly screen reliably and quickly. For this endeavor, all you need is a so-called A + B Magnetic Tape. The tape is attached to your door or window frame with one side and to the window screen with the other, so that a strong connection is created.
Attaching a fly net for windows using Velcro Tape
Velcro Tape, if already supplied with the fly screen, can be a practical alternative to magnetic tape. Usually, appropriate supplementary tools like a cutter are also part of the package. The insect net is first pressed firmly to the Velcro tape that was applied beforehand to the door or window. Afterwards, any protruding edges can be cut off if the mesh does not fit your window perfectly. Similar to the installation with a magnetic tape, this option is more flexible in terms of mounting and dismounting the insect mesh. Order your fly screen today!
How to repair a fly screen
It can happen that a mosquito net gets damaged or destroyed. This can be caused by pets trying to make their way out through insect curtains. Wild animals such as birds or rodents can also demolish a fly net in search of food as they look for insects that are entangled in the fly screen.
In any case, the damage should be repaired as soon as possible, since otherwise the window screen will lose its effectiveness. However, an entire window screen replacement is often not necessary, as the fly net can be fixed by using the right products in just a few simple steps.
Fly Screen Repair Kits: The alternative to buying a new window screen
A special window screen repair kit can be used to repair an insect screen. This consists either of pre-cut repair patches, which are attached to the window screen, or it can be cut to size individually. The latter has the advantage that you can decide for yourself how small or large the patches should be that cover the damaged bug screen.
