Bar Magnets
What does a bar magnet look like?
A bar magnet is, as the name suggests, a magnet which visually resembles a cuboid bar. This means that bar magnets have an elongated, angular shape. Most people are familiar with bar magnets from physics and science lessons, where they are often used to demonstrate magnetic phenomena.
Neodymium bar magnet — Your advantages
In our magnet store you can buy bar magnets made of neodymium. Neodymium magnets are characterized by a particularly strong magnetic force at a small size, in contrast to less adhesive ferrite magnets. Neodymium bar magnets are popular in industry primarily for this reason. However, if processing has to be carried out at high temperatures, the choice is more likely to fall on sturdy ferrite magnets. For everyday use, however, our bar magnets made of neodymium are perfect, as long as they are not exposed to extremely high or low temperatures.
What happens when you divide a bar magnet?
If you divide a bar magnet, then two new magnets are created. This is because there cannot be a north and south pole on two different magnets, only two magnets, each with its own north and south pole. This process continues again and again the more often you divide the bar magnet, so that smaller and smaller magnets are created. This is not only true for bar magnets, but also for many other magnets.
Is a horseshoe magnet stronger than a bar magnet?
Whether one magnet is stronger than the other depends on many factors, including the size and degree of magnetization of both magnets. But the shape is also decisive for the magnetic force: In a direct comparison and with the same size, horseshoe magnets are stronger than bar magnets. This is due to the fact that the north and south poles of horseshoe magnets are close to each other. This significantly increases the magnetic force.
Where can a bar magnet be used?
A bar magnet can be used in many situations, as its versatile shape allows it to perform different functions. Likewise, the different sizes in which neodymium bar magnets are available provide additional flexibility in use. Bar magnets are mainly used
- in workshops for organizing nails, screws and other metallic objects,
- for making magnetic fasteners, for example, for necklaces or bracelets,
- for experiments in laboratories, testing and research institutes and
- much more.
Bar magnets in offices
A bar magnet is also excellent for use in offices and other workplaces for the reasons mentioned above. Strong bar magnets is especially useful on magnetic whiteboards, magnetic bulletin boards, and whiteboards because its shape allows you to grip it better than a disc magnet, so you can move it back and forth at will. As a strong neodymium magnet, a single bar magnet can also hold several sheets at once, making it a very efficient office magnet.
Bar magnets in schools and universities
Also, next to the horseshoe magnet, the bar magnet is probably the most commonly used magnet for school and university experiments in science lessons. All that is additionally needed are iron filings and a flat surface on which the arrangement of the field lines can be easily observed. Then, for example with a pencil, the lines can be traced. Of course, neodymium bar magnets do just as well on the classic green school blackboards and whiteboards to make lesson plans, worksheets and other important documents visible to the entire classroom or lecture hall.
Bar magnets for hobby and home
At home, a neodymium bar magnet can be used for individual jewelry design to easily close bracelets and necklaces with it. Similarly, bar magnets, especially in smaller versions, are used in model making. A bar magnet also sticks easily on refrigerators or metal doors, so you can attach postcards, photos and drawings underneath.

Discover our wide range of products
Whether the product is magnetic or not — at GAUDER you can order a large selection of high-quality magnets and adhesive tapes. Let our wide range of products help you get inspired:
With our self-adhesive magnetic squares and dots, you can create your own magnets. To do this, simply attach a magnetic plate with the self-adhesive side to smaller objects such as pens, rulers or scissors and then attach the objects with the magnetic side to a blackboard or whiteboard. Photos, drawings or postcards can also be attached to refrigerators with GAUDER magnetic dots and squares and will not be covered by a large magnet.
Our writable dry erase magnetic labels are popular in kindergartens, schools and offices. We offer these colorful tapes in different sizes, combinations and colors. Using the included whiteboard marker, the magnetic labels can be individually written on and wiped off again, making them a sustainable alternative to notepads.
